| Additional information |
Liberia's 1847 coinage was produced in the United States — almost certainly at a private facility rather than the official U.S. Mint — coinciding with the year the American Colonization Society's settlement formally declared itself an independent republic. These pattern pieces were part of an exploratory series testing denominations and compositions before any circulating coinage was formally adopted. Few were struck, and fewer still were meant to leave the hands of officials and society members evaluating them.
