Ceylon's small aluminium coinage of this period was produced in the years following the 1948 independence, as the island nation worked to establish its own monetary identity distinct from the colonial-era issues. The 2-cent denomination saw limited practical use — rampant inflation through the 1960s steadily eroded its purchasing power until it became functionally worthless in everyday transactions before the series even ended.
Ceylon became the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972, terminating this series a year early by political circumstance rather than monetary planning.
