Additional information

Malta's decimal coinage was introduced in 1972 when the country converted from the pound-shilling-pence system to the Maltese lira, subdivided into 100 cents. The transition followed independence from Britain in 1964 and was part of a broader effort to establish monetary infrastructure under domestic control. The Central Bank of Malta had only been established in 1968, making this among its earliest issued coinage series.

The ten-year production run ending in 1982 largely reflects steady domestic demand rather than any single minting event.
