Obverse description A heraldic eagle with wings displayed stands perched atop a cloud in the center of the field, its head turned to the right. The eagle is rendered in a bold, classical style characteristic of Gobrecht's engraving work. The circular legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1836 flanked by two raised dots positioned at the lower field. A fine dentilated border frames the entire design.
