Andorra issued its first domestic coinage series in 2002, ending centuries of reliance on French francs and Spanish pesetas — and, after their replacement, euros — as de facto circulating currencies. The 2003 dated pieces are among the earliest coins produced under Andorra's own monetary authority, though the principality remains outside the eurozone proper and issues coinage under a monetary agreement with the EU rather than full membership.
