| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four large seal script (zhuanshu) Chinese ideograms disposed in the four quadrants reading clockwise from the top: 元 (Yuan), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), 佑 (You), together forming the reign title legend 元佑通寶 (Yuanyou Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in high relief with the characteristic rounded, archaic strokes of the seal script tradition. A plain raised outer rim encircles the field, and no additional decorative elements are present. |
