Obverse description Central square perforation (cash hole) surrounded by a flat inner rim. Four Chinese ideograms disposed in the four cardinal quadrants around the central hole, rendered in cursive running script (xingshu) and reading clockwise from the top: 元 (Yuan), 符 (Fu), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), forming the reign-era legend 'Yuanfu Tongbao.' The characters exhibit the fluid, abbreviated brushstroke quality characteristic of xingshu calligraphy, cast in low but distinct relief. The field between the inner and outer rim is plain, and the broad outer rim is raised and unadorned.
