Obverse description Central square perforation (方穿) surrounded by a plain raised square rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in the four cardinal fields reading clockwise in cursive running script (行書): 元 (top), 符 (right), 通 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the reign title inscription 元符通寶 (Yuanfu Tongbao). The characters display the characteristic fluid, abbreviated strokes of the xingshu style, with bold raised relief issuing from cast production. A plain raised outer rim borders the coin field, which is otherwise undecorated.
