| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion reading clockwise: 熙寧通寶 (Xining Tongbao). The characters are separated by the arms of an implied cross formed by the inner and outer raised rims. The outer rim is bold and slightly irregular, characteristic of cast iron coinage. The fields exhibit the heavy oxidation and surface porosity typical of Northern Song iron cash. |

| Reverse description | Plain reverse featuring a central square perforation framed by a raised inner rim, with a single raised dot appearing above the square hole in the upper field — the distinguishing variety marker for Hartill 16.207. A bold outer rim encircles the otherwise unadorned field. The surface shows characteristic iron oxidation with russet and ochre patination. The raised dot is clearly visible and confirms the attribution of this specific Xining Tongbao variety. |
