Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading top, right, bottom, left: 天 (Tiān), 通 (Tōng), 定 (Dìng), 寶 (Bǎo). The characters are boldly cast in relief within a plain, slightly raised field, enclosed by a raised inner rim surrounding the square central perforation and an outer raised rim defining the coin's periphery. The overall style is characteristic of late Yuan-period rebel coinage, with robust, well-defined strokes and a slightly uneven casting surface consistent with hand-finished sand or clay mould production.
Obverse script Chinese (traditional, regular script)
Obverse lettering 天定通寶
(Translation: Tianding Tongbao — "Tianding era Universal Currency"; Tianding being the 4th reign era of Xu Shouhui of the Tianwan Kingdom, 1359–1360)
