| Obverse description | Cast brass cash coin centered on a square central perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the square hole, reading top-bottom-right-left: 泰 (Tai), 昌 (Chang), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), collectively forming the reign-title legend 'Taichang Tongbao' (Universal currency of the Taichang era). The characters are bold and slightly worn, set within a flat field bounded by a raised outer rim. The coin shows overall patination consistent with aged brass, with areas of green verdigris. |

| Reverse description | Uniface reverse, entirely plain. The flat field is undecorated and featureless, bounded by a raised inner rim surrounding the square central perforation and a raised outer rim at the coin's edge. The surface displays a uniform patina with slight granular texture consistent with the casting process. |
