Obverse description Cast brass cash coin centered on a square central perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the square hole, reading top-bottom-right-left: 泰 (Tai), 昌 (Chang), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), collectively forming the reign-title legend 'Taichang Tongbao' (Universal currency of the Taichang era). The characters are bold and slightly worn, set within a flat field bounded by a raised outer rim. The coin shows overall patination consistent with aged brass, with areas of green verdigris.

Reverse description Uniface reverse, entirely plain. The flat field is undecorated and featureless, bounded by a raised inner rim surrounding the square central perforation and a raised outer rim at the coin's edge. The surface displays a uniform patina with slight granular texture consistent with the casting process.
