Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading order, rendered in Clerical script (lishu). The four-character reign inscription reads clockwise from top: 聖 (Sheng), 宋 (Song), 寶 (Bao), 元 (Yuan). The characters are boldly cast in shallow relief against a flat field, with the broad raised rim characteristic of Northern Song iron cash. The strokes display the distinctive horizontal emphasis and squared terminals typical of the lishu calligraphic style.
