| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, within a round coin body bearing a raised outer rim. Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the traditional cross pattern, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 紹 (Shao), 定 (Ding), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao). The inscription 紹定通寶 denotes the Shaoding reign era of Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song dynasty. The field between the square and outer rims is plain and unadorned. |
