Obverse description Round brass pattern piece struck in the traditional Chinese cash coin format, featuring a central square perforation. Four large Chinese characters are arranged in the four quadrants surrounding the central hole, reading clockwise from top: 福 (Fú), 通 (Tōng), 建 (Jiàn), 寶 (Bǎo), forming the legend 福建通寶 (Fujian Tongbao, meaning 'Fujian Currency'). The characters are rendered in relief against a flat field, in the style of classical Chinese cash coinage. The broad outer rim is plain and well-defined, consistent with a mechanically produced pattern piece rather than a hand-cast traditional cash coin.
