Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese ideograms in Regular script (Kaishu) arranged in cruciform reading order around the central hole. The four characters 開禧通寶 (Kai Xi Tong Bao) are disposed with one character at each cardinal position relative to the square hole, reading top-right-bottom-left in the traditional clockwise sequence. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field, with a plain raised outer rim encircling the entire design. The iron flan shows characteristic casting texture, with the legends remaining legible despite surface oxidation.
