Belgium marked the centennial of its independence — achieved after the 1830 revolution against Dutch rule — with a pair of commemorative issues struck in both French and Dutch, reflecting the country's entrenched linguistic divide. The Dutch-language version, this piece, carried an inherent political charge: Flemish cultural and political movements had been agitating for official recognition of Dutch throughout the previous decades, and including it on a national commemorative was a deliberate concession to that pressure.
The 1930 World's Fair in Antwerp, the Liège centennial exposition, and a raft of official ceremonies all fell within the same calendar year, driving demand for commemorative issues across multiple formats.
