Obverse description Royal coat of arms of Portugal occupying the central field, flanked on each side by the mint letters 'D' and 'O' denoting the Dio (Diu) mint. The shield is rendered in the crude, worn style typical of hammered colonial copper coinage. Note that on some specimens the letter 'D' appears inverted, or both letters read 'D-D' rather than the standard 'D-O'.
