Obverse description Central field depicts a standing female figure representing the Roman Republic, shown in classical drapery and wearing a helmet, holding a pike or staff surmounted by a Phrygian cap (liberty pole) in her right hand and resting her left hand on a shield or fasces; the figure stands on a small pedestal or base. The circumferential legend REPVBLICA ROMANA is inscribed in Latin capital letters around the periphery, separated from the central device by a raised inner border. The entire design is enclosed within a toothed or milled outer rim characteristic of the republican coinage of the period.
