Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination and date in three lines at the centre of the field: numeral '2' above 'BAIOCCHI' and the date below. The entire central inscription is enclosed within an open laurel wreath composed of two symmetrical branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow, their tips left open at the top rather than clasped. A mint letter (B for Bologna or R for Rome) appears below the wreath at the base. The design is framed by a beaded border running along the coin's rim.

Additional information

Pio IX had granted a constitution and appointed a liberal ministry in 1848, but the assassination of his chief minister Pellegrino Rossi in November of that year forced him to flee Rome disguised as a simple priest. The Roman Republic was proclaimed in February 1849, and the pontifical government effectively ceased to function. Coins of this transitional type were struck across that rupture — some under papal authority, some under the short-lived Republic — making issuing authority on surviving pieces genuinely ambiguous without die attribution.
