| Obverse description | The Papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IX occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield charged with diagonal bands and rampant lions, set within elaborate baroque scrollwork supporters. Above the shield, the papal tiara (triregnum) surmounts two crossed keys, the traditional symbols of the Holy See. The engraver's initials N·C· (for Niccolò Cerbara) appear in the lower field beneath the arms. The circular Latin legend reads PIVS·IX·PON·MAX·ANN·IV·, separated by pellets, running along the inner border of a beaded rim. |
