Additional information

Ernest Louis ruled Hesse-Darmstadt during a period of grinding financial strain brought on by the Nine Years' War and its aftermath, forcing smaller German states to produce low-denomination silver coinage in quantities their mints were poorly equipped to sustain. The 2 Albus occupied a workhorse role in everyday exchange, the Albus being a regional unit with roots stretching back to the Rhenish monetary system of the late medieval period.

The sixteen-year production window for this type reflects how long Ernest Louis resisted recoinage despite ongoing debasement pressures elsewhere in the Holy Roman Empire.
