Zahir Shah's government introduced aluminum coinage in the late 1950s as Afghanistan modernized its currency infrastructure with support from foreign technical advisors. The 1958 issues replaced heavier cupro-nickel pieces that had become expensive to produce relative to their face value — a recurring problem for low-denomination Afghan coinage throughout the mid-century.
