Obverse description Central device depicts the Afghan royal eagle displayed with wings fully spread, perched atop a crown, set against radiating sun rays emanating from behind the bird's head. The Arabic legend أفغانستان (Afghanistan) arcs along the upper field, while the Afghan Solar Hijri date ١٣٤٠ appears in large Eastern Arabic numerals in the lower field. The composition is rendered in a bold, slightly stylized relief characteristic of mid-twentieth century Afghan coinage.
