Additional information

Birendra's coronation on February 24, 1975 was a spectacle of deliberate archaism — the ceremony followed Vedic rites and was broadcast internationally, positioning Nepal's monarchy as both ancient and modern at once. The date was chosen by royal astrologers, as has been the practice for Nepali royal events for centuries. This small gold Asarphi was struck specifically as a commemorative issue for the occasion, part of a wider suite of denominations released by the Nepal Rastra Bank to mark the event.

The .999 fineness is notably purer than earlier Asarphi issues from the Shah dynasty period.
