Ukraine's post-independence hyperinflation moved so fast that denominations climbed from single karbovantsi to millions within a few years. The 2,000,000 karbovanets note belongs to that terminal phase — by the time these were circulating, the karbovanets had become practically worthless, and the series was retired in 1996 when the hryvnia replaced it at a rate of 100,000 karbovantsiv to one hryvnia.
The Canadian Bank Note Company produced several Ukrainian issues from this period under contract — a practical arrangement for a newly sovereign state without established security printing infrastructure. The guilloche underprint is the primary anti-counterfeiting measure, modest by the standards of the era.
