Weinsberg is a small town in Württemberg better known for the 1140 siege in which Countess Idelinde allegedly negotiated safe passage for the women of the castle, each permitted to carry one person on her back — the men escaped this way, and the story became one of medieval Germany's most repeated anecdotes. Whether the Stadtgemeinde consciously traded on that local pride when issuing emergency currency in 1923 is unknown, but Weinsberg notgeld from this period circulated through one of the most acute phases of Weimar hyperinflation.

The watermarked paper is notable for a municipal issue of this denomination — most town-level notgeld at two million marks was printed on whatever was available.
