The Thüringische Staatsbank was one of dozens of German regional and municipal institutions authorized to issue emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, as the Reichsbank struggled to print sufficient denominations fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. The 2,000,000 Mark figure, which would have seemed astronomic even months earlier, was already losing practical value within days of issue by mid-1923.
Printing in Weimar itself was a logistical necessity — shipping finished notes from distant commercial printers introduced dangerous delays when denominations became obsolete in transit.
