Teppichfabrikzentrale A.-G. was a carpet manufacturing and trading company headquartered in Leipzig, and this 2,000,000 Mark note is a piece of Notgeld issued during the hyperinflation of 1923 — when private firms, municipalities, and industry associations across Germany were printing their own emergency money because the Reichsbank simply could not keep pace with demand. By mid-1923, denominations that would have seemed absurd eighteen months earlier were routine.

Corporate Notgeld from industrial issuers like this one tends to be underappreciated relative to the decorative municipal issues, but it documents something the municipal series cannot: how deeply the monetary collapse penetrated commercial infrastructure.
