Rheinfelden's 2-million-mark note belongs to the frantic late summer of 1923, when German municipal authorities were printing emergency currency faster than the Reichsbank could issue it. The Stadtgemeinde turned to a local press — Buchdruckerei P. Krauseneck, just down the street — because there was simply no time to commission outside printers. By the point these notes entered circulation, the denomination that had seemed staggering in January was effectively small change by August.
