Brombach was a small industrial commune southeast of Lörrach, administratively separate from its larger neighbor until absorbed in 1937. Like hundreds of German municipalities in the summer and autumn of 1923, it was forced into emergency currency production not by choice but by the complete collapse of Reichsbank note distribution — physical cash simply could not reach local economies fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. The Oberbadisches Volksblatt was a regional newspaper printer pressed into Notgeld production, as were countless provincial presses that year.
At 2,000,000 Mark, this note dates from mid-1923, before denominations climbed into the billions and trillions by November.
