Bergisch Gladbach, a mid-sized industrial town east of Cologne, issued emergency currency during the hyperinflation peak of 1923 — the same period when the German mark was losing value fast enough to require denomination jumps measured in millions within weeks. A 2,000,000 Mark note was a routine spending denomination by mid-1923, not a curiosity. The municipal authority, like hundreds of German cities and towns that year, contracted local commercial printers rather than wait for Reichsbank supply chains that had completely broken down under demand.
Heiss & Co. in Cologne handled a substantial volume of Notgeld printing for regional municipalities during this period.
