Obverse description Facing bee depicted point-upward at centre of field, rendered in high relief with segmented abdomen, outstretched wings, and prominent forelegs. The insect is enclosed within a wreath of olive or laurel, the branches framing the entire design. The magistrate's abbreviation E-Φ (for ΕΦΕΣΙΩΝ, denoting Ephesos) appears in the field flanking the bee. The engraving is characteristic of the confident, naturalistic style employed on Ephesian civic bronze coinage of the second century BC.
