IIT Roorkee holds the distinction of being the oldest technical institution in Asia, founded in 1847 as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering — established primarily to train engineers for the construction of the Ganges Canal, one of the largest irrigation projects of the colonial period. The canal itself opened in 1854 and irrigated millions of acres across the Doab region. The college became the University of Roorkee in 1949 and received IIT status only in 2001, making it both the oldest and the last to be granted that designation among the original IITs.
