Additional information

Agathokles seized power in Syracuse in 317 BC through a coup of exceptional brutality — convening a public assembly, surrounding it with his troops, and massacring several thousand political opponents on the spot. His coinage was struck against that backdrop of violent consolidation, issued by a man who would later carry the war directly into Carthaginian territory in Africa, the first Greek commander to do so.

BMC 629 belongs to the early phase of his rule, before he assumed the title of king in 304 BC.
