Maria I and her uncle-husband Pedro III reigned jointly from 1777, though Pedro's role was largely ceremonial — he died in 1786 having exercised little meaningful authority. This coin therefore circulates under a dual portrait arrangement that in practice reflected a single-ruler monarchy. The Bahia mint, operating from Salvador, was one of Brazil's three colonial gold mints, all established specifically to process bullion from the interior before it could be smuggled out of the captaincy.
The Bentes reference splits this type across two numbers, likely distinguishing die variants in the portrait treatment rather than separate issues.
