Obverse description The central device features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the five escutcheons of Portugal in saltire, each charged with five bezants, and a border of seven castles — surmounted by a narrow royal crown. The date appears to the left of the shield and the denomination 160 to the right, flanked by two floral ornaments (roses). The circumferential legend in Latin runs along the border of the coin within a beaded inner circle.

Reverse description The central device depicts a large armillary sphere — the symbol of the Portuguese overseas empire — rendered in bold relief with clearly delineated meridian and parallel bands. Superimposed upon the sphere is the cross of the Order of Christ, its four arms extending to the edges of the central design. The circumferential Latin motto legend encircles the design within a beaded border, reading continuously around the field.
