Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of Emperor Justinian I facing right, wearing an imperial paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. A christogram (chi-rho monogram) is visible to the left of the bust in the field. The Latin imperial legend runs around the periphery, partially legible due to the irregular flan and hammered strike typical of early Byzantine coinage. The portrait is rendered in a stylized late antique manner, with strong facial features and a prominent diadem visible atop the head.
