Obverse description The national coat of arms of Equatorial Guinea occupies the central field, depicting a silver shield charged with a silk-cotton tree (God tree) above a banner inscribed with the national motto in three sections. Six six-pointed stars arc above the shield representing the mainland and island territories. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DE GUINEA ECUATORIAL' runs along the upper periphery, while the date '1996' appears in the lower field below the shield. The design is struck against a deeply mirrored proof field with frosted relief elements.

Additional information

Equatorial Guinea's 1990s exotic animal and zodiac issues were produced almost entirely for the collector export market, with no meaningful domestic circulation — the CFA franc zone made high-denomination gold pieces functionally irrelevant to everyday commerce on the mainland or Bioko Island. This piece was struck under contract by a European mint and sold primarily through wholesale numismatic distributors, a practice the government used aggressively throughout the decade to generate hard currency revenue.

Mintages for these issues were rarely published and remain poorly documented in standard references.
