| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Tanzania occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported by a man and a woman, with a flaming torch at the apex of the shield and crossed tools in the lower quarters above a wavy base representing the sea. The motto ribbon below the shield bears the legend UHURU NA UMOJA in the exergue. The country name TANZANIA arcs along the upper periphery in large letters, while the denomination 1500 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower rim. |

Issued the year Francis turned 80, this miniature gold piece belongs to the brief but prolific wave of sub-Saharan African collector coinage produced almost entirely for the European and Asian novelty market — Tanzania itself having no meaningful commercial relationship with the Vatican. The Bank of Tanzania became a favored issuer for such pieces largely because licensing arrangements were straightforward and regulatory scrutiny minimal.
