| Obverse description | Left-facing bare-headed portrait of President Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The effigy, engraved by Christopher Ironside, displays finely detailed hair texture and strong facial modelling. Flanking the portrait on either side are decorative floral sprigs. The upper legend reads TANZANIA 1974 and the lower legend reads RAIS WA KWANZA, meaning 'First President' in Swahili. |
