Issued to mark the 2550th anniversary of the Parinirvana of the Buddha — a milestone date calculated from the traditional Theravada reckoning of 543 BCE as the year of his passing — this coin was part of a broader commemorative program coordinated across several Buddhist-majority nations in 2006. Sri Lanka, as a Theravada heartland with an unbroken monastic lineage traceable to the Mahavihara tradition in Anuradhapura, took particular institutional interest in the occasion. The government declared a national celebration lasting the full year.
