Obverse description The obverse features the royal cypher and name of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev arranged around a central circle containing a trishul (trident), the principal symbol of Shiva. Flanking the central device are paired Hindu iconographic symbols: a chakra (discus) and sankha (conch shell) at the mid-left and mid-right respectively, a padma (lotus) and gada (mace) at the lower left and right, and a chandra (crescent moon) and surya (sun) at the upper left and right. The Devanagari legend encircles the design, recording the monarch's full royal title and the Bikram Sambat regnal year 2057.
