Additional information

The 1500-rupee denomination was created specifically for bullion and commemorative gold issues — it has no circulation history and was never intended as transactional currency. Mauritius has issued gold coins sporadically since the 1970s, largely targeting the collector and investor market rather than domestic commerce. The .9166 fineness is the traditional 22-karat standard historically associated with sovereign-type coinage, the same alloy specification used by the British Royal Mint for gold sovereigns.
