| Reverse description | The reverse features a right-facing bust portrait of the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni in high relief, rendered in a detailed realist style consistent with 19th-century commemorative portraiture. Manzoni is depicted in civilian dress with a cravat, his facial features and hair carefully modeled. The legend ALESSANDRO MANZONI arcs along the upper periphery, and the birth and death years · 1785-1873 · appear in the lower field, flanking the base of the portrait. |

| Additional information |
This piece belongs to a broader commemorative gold series issued by Paraguay in the early 1970s honoring European literary and cultural figures — an unusual choice for a landlocked South American nation, and one driven largely by the numismatic export market rather than any domestic commemorative tradition. Manzoni, who died in 1873 exactly a century before this coin's issue, was selected as part of the centenary of his death. Paraguay under Stroessner was actively exploiting foreign collector demand for proof gold issues during this period, and the timing of the 1873–1973 centenary provided convenient justification.
