Niger has no meaningful historical connection to woolly mammoths — this is a bullion collectible issued under a licensing arrangement, one of dozens of similar "exotic insert" coins produced for the European collector market under African nominal authority. The real draw is the small fragment of genuine Siberian mammoth tusk embedded in the reverse field, sourced from permafrost excavations in Yakutia, Russia, where agricultural and infrastructure development has exposed thousands of subfossil specimens since the 1990s.
Each insert is technically unique in age — most Siberian tusk material dates between 10,000 and 40,000 years BP.
