Ivory Coast's CFA franc issues of the mid-2000s were produced under a licensing arrangement that allowed the government to authorize commemorative and collector pieces despite the country having ceded day-to-day monetary policy to the BCEAO — the regional central bank governing the West African Economic and Monetary Union. These small gold pieces were never intended for circulation and were sold directly into the European collector market.
At 0.5 grams, the gold content is negligible by bullion standards, which places the entire value proposition on collector demand rather than melt value.
