Yugoslavia hosted the 36th World Table Tennis Championships in Novi Sad in April 1981, and this issue was struck to mark the occasion. The tournament drew particular political attention because of competing delegations from China and Taiwan — a recurring friction point in international table tennis since the sport had famously served as the diplomatic back-channel between the United States and the People's Republic of China a decade earlier.
