The University of Paris — commonly called the Sorbonne — was founded around 1257 by Robert de Sorbon, confessor to Louis IX, initially as a modest college for theology students of limited means. The 750th anniversary fell in 2007, prompting a handful of commemorative issues across multiple mints. This BCEAO piece is among the smallest gold commemoratives in regular production, at half a gram — a format increasingly common in the 2000s as gold prices rose and issuers sought accessible price points for collector markets with no connection to the commemorated subject.
