Issued to mark Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th birthday — the auspicious fifth twelve-year cycle in Buddhist tradition, considered deeply significant across Thai culture — this was one of several denominations struck for the occasion, ranging from silver circulation pieces up through high-denomination gold. The Royal Thai Mint produced these in strictly limited numbers for presentation and collector purposes; they saw no commercial circulation.
