Luoyang Bridge in Quanzhou, completed in 1059 under the supervision of Cai Xiang, was the first large stone-beam sea-crossing bridge in Chinese history — a genuine engineering problem solved by floating the foundation stones into position on rafts timed to the tides. Quanzhou itself was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, which directly prompted this commemorative issue the following year.
